How to Save a Life. March 4, 2009

This is simple.

Just BE THERE.

If you’ve tuned in to this blog for any amount of time you will have found out that my father has stage 4 lung cancer and was given a “timeline.”  Well, he’s outlived his timeline but on February 20, he fell into pretty bad shape.

To explain – he had a treatment the week before, his blood counts went dangerously low and then bam…he was weakened to a state where he couldn’t fight off any infection, cold, virus, etc.  The remedy:  Blood Transfusion which was performed on Feb. 21.  Next comes the scary part:

The next morning, my mother noticed a violent reaction which my father was having to the transfusion.  She ran into the hall and called for help.  My dad said he didn’t remember anything about this but when he woke up he claims “the entire hospital” was standing over his bed.  After the reaction dad was transferred to the ICU where he stayed for 24 hours.

Pretty simply put, my mom saved dad’s life.  The doctors all said that had she not been there then dad wouldn’t be here now.

My dad even says that he had the “out of body, seeing Jesus” experience that morning, which blows my mind.

The point….”BE THERE.”

My mother and father have been by each other’s sides for 44 years and I imagine that they’ve both saved each other’s lives in some form or fashion during the course of their marriage.  This time mom did it quite literally.  I just hope that my marriage can endure the trials and hardships that theirs has.

Aaaaaaaaaaaaaannnnd cue The Fray……….Now.

Same here at the Cox household. In almost 33 years we’ve saved each other countless times — some literally, as you mentioned. Marriage is not always easy; but love was never meant to be total bliss. The hard times form a much tougher fabric.

May 26, 2009 Jad, I am sending your mom and dad a note today…also a belated birthday wish for your Dad…and an encouragement note to your Mom. I just want you to know I am still praying for HEALING and a MIRACLE for your Dad. They happen every day and we cannot give up home. I cannot imagine what you all are going through. Just know, even if you don’t hear from some of your friends, people are still hoping and praying every day for your dad…and your whole family. We have known you all a long time…since you…as a young boy started to Brook Hollow.
