Recently I purchased John Mayer’s new DVD:  “Where The Light Is”  and it truly blows me away.  It’s been in the DVD player since I purchased it and I must have watched it 20 times.  It’s a recorded concert in LA which featured Mayer in three different roles during the show:  First, acoustic set, second (and by far my favorite) the John Mayer Trio, and third his regular touring band.  The result…a fantastic DVD and album.

Now, as mentioned above, my favorite part is the “John Mayer Trio” section of the concert.  It’s raw…it’s stripped down…it’s fired-up.  Complete with Hendrix covers and all, the trio is uber-tight and create a “wall of sound” like the old recordings of the late 60’s and early 70’s.

Let’s go a little further…who I’m really impressed with is the drummer (no surprise) Steve Jordan.  In the video below watch and listen to how he keeps everything so tight and in the pocket.  His kick and snare work is flawless and he knows exactly how and where to wash his cymbal pattern (much in the style of Mitch Mitchell from “the experience”).

Watch the vid, be amazed….you’ll thank me.  I love that they throw in a Hendrix lick at around 3:00 (Power of Soul from Band of Gypsys)

I’m a huge John Mayer fan and see him every time he comes anywhere nearby. One of my favorite shows was definitely the trio a few years back!

I have had this CD for awhile (I think I told you that you *had* to get it awhile back), and it never occurred to me that there was a DVD as well. When we were in Destin last week I saw it at the Sony store and bought it right away (in Blu-Ray format no less). We got home Sunday night and I popped it in and watched about half of it. The trio is awesome. I am digging it. It looks great in high def too. I see a lot of Hendrix love in his playing, not just the covers, but his sound and style.
