How to Save a Life. March 4, 2009

This is simple.
Just BE THERE.
If you’ve tuned in to this blog for any amount of time you will have found out that my father has stage 4 lung cancer and was given a “timeline.” Well, he’s outlived his timeline but on February 20, he fell into pretty bad shape.
To explain – he had a treatment the week before, his blood counts went dangerously low and then bam…he was weakened to a state where he couldn’t fight off any infection, cold, virus, etc. The remedy: Blood Transfusion which was performed on Feb. 21. Next comes the scary part:
The next morning, my mother noticed a violent reaction which my father was having to the transfusion. She ran into the hall and called for help. My dad said he didn’t remember anything about this but when he woke up he claims “the entire hospital” was standing over his bed. After the reaction dad was transferred to the ICU where he stayed for 24 hours.
Pretty simply put, my mom saved dad’s life. The doctors all said that had she not been there then dad wouldn’t be here now.
My dad even says that he had the “out of body, seeing Jesus” experience that morning, which blows my mind.
The point….”BE THERE.”
My mother and father have been by each other’s sides for 44 years and I imagine that they’ve both saved each other’s lives in some form or fashion during the course of their marriage. This time mom did it quite literally. I just hope that my marriage can endure the trials and hardships that theirs has.
Aaaaaaaaaaaaaannnnd cue The Fray……….Now.
I Couldn’t Resist: Jonah’s First Video February 16, 2009

Several of you guys have seen Jonah do his dancing / running routine and by popular demand (particularly by Snake) we decided to film it.
To be honest, we’re parents now and we really don’t have much better to do than to record our child doing something cute.
Either way….Enjoy:
Friday Fun Post: My Favorite Hip-Hop moment EVER February 13, 2009
Posted by Jad in Drums, Entertainment, Music.2 comments
In honor of the fact that I just landed a gig playing drums for a hip-hop act I figured I’d post my favorite moment in Rap.
It’s LL Cool J performing Mama Said Knock You Out on MTV Unplugged circa 1993.
I remember watching this in amazement at how much raw energy the Band and Cool J brought to the stage.
Check it out.
I especially love the anti-crack message that comes around 4:45 in the video.
I’ll let you in on more details about the gig soon.

Remember the Inaugural Ball televised on CBS which featured Sting, Stevie Wonder, Beyonce, Shakira, Faith Hill and a bunch of other legendary artists?
Well, my friend WES LITTLE was the house drummer for that gig.
Yep. House drummer for the biggest ball of them all where the newly sworn in President Obama and his first lady had their first big dance as the first couple live on national TV.
I would love to say that I was a good enough drummer to play for the president one day.
Take a look as he plays with Sting and Mr. Wonder on “Brand New Day”
Wes is seen at 4:27 in the vid.

For those of you who are just tuning in to my blog (most likely via Facebook), I have a little back story for you.
I started my blog about a year ago to give myself a creative outlet in which I could write about life, love, becoming a father, etc. Another reason was for “writing therapy” regarding my Dad who had just been diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer.
Since April 10 (when we found out the severity of my Dad’s condition…which date also happens to be my birthday) I have written a number of posts on my Dad giving my faithful few followers updates on his condition.
As of late, I haven’t. He’s been doing great. He has even grown back his hair from chemo (well, most of it anyway).
He’s endured six rounds of chemotherapy which made him lose his hair…he’s endured apox. 10 rounds of radiation which has made him just plain hurt…he’s gone to countless Dr. appointments…been poked, prodded, etc. All to which many prayers have been answered. He is enjoying life and has been able to see and hold his first grandson.
BUT…there’s always been the 500 lbs. gorilla in the room.
Today he went in for another scan. Tomorrow we find out the progress of his disease. We are hoping for the best.
Please keep us in your thoughts and prayers.
I Give In: 25 Random Facts January 31, 2009
Posted by Jad in Uncategorized.2 comments
I’ve been tagged several times on Facebook to participate in the “25 random facts” note that’s been going around. I guess I’ll succumb to peer pressure. I will tag those who tagged me and I will tag a few others but I won’t tag 25 of you.
My blog links to my “notes” section in Facebook so I’m doing double duty posting it to both blog and Facebook.
Here goes:
1. I’m adopted.
2. My name “Jad” is derived from my Father’s initials. Now my son has the same initials too. All three of us (dad, me and Jonah) have the same middle name “Andrew.”
3. I’ve drummed for two musicals…Grease and a competition my fraternity entered in college.
4. I’ve had a TON of different jobs including a sales associate at Abercrombie and Fitch to working at Schlotsky’s Deli. My favorite in college was working at a camping gear store.
5. I once dressed up as a clown and sold balloons in the mall to little kids. At some point I realized that all they wanted was the helium so I just sold them untied and filled them back up for them for a small price that I pocketed.
6. I have a degree in Ornamental Horticulture and Landscape Design.
7. I worked for 14 summers dating back to 1992 doing some form of turf management. 12 of those summers were at Hillwood Country Club.
8. I played drums in a grunge band called Mindscape in high school (circa 1993). Turns out if we would have been successful there might have been some form of lawsuit b/c there was a software company of the same name.
9. I taught myself how to play drums…(I know, it’s apparent). To this day I’ve only had one drum lesson (and it shows). *(these comments were made to disarm anyone about to comment the same things)
10. I “played” high school football for one season and made it on the field once. My nod to my friends in the stands that I was bored would be if I scratched my butt. My friends enjoyed that.
11. My first car was a 1987 Nissan Sentra that liked to stall in the rain while hydroplaning…I had 3 wrecks in said Sentra.
12. I once acted in a play for competition.
13. I have done lots of stupid things for money most of which include eating stupid things. I once ate already chewed pizza for a dollar.
14. I once ate 83 chicken wings in one sitting.
15. I once ate approx. 20 bowls of jello in one sitting.
16. I’ve not traveled very much. My first time flying was on my honeymoon in 2002 and I’ve never been farther west than western Arkansas.
17. I was mooned by Peyton Manning once in college while walking in to my apartment.
18. I’ve been a UT fan and a UNC fan all of my life.
19. My job my senior year in college was helping take care of Neyland Stadium which as a lifelong UT fan was amazing. I was on the field during games and I even had keys to the stadium.
20. I seriously contemplated running for political office in 2007.
21. I am terrified of heights and found that out while hiking a very steep mountain.
22. I ran a half marathon and truly enjoyed running until I broke my ankle training in 2006…the only time I’ve ever broken a bone.
23. When I was a kid I wanted to be an NBA basketball player that went by the name “Slam” Duncan.
24. My first date I went on with my wife was a double date…but it was with someone else.
25. One of my goals in life is to have a beautiful and loving family of my own and things are looking good so far.
Thursday’s Question: What’s your favorite “Old Man Joke?” January 29, 2009
Posted by Jad in Uncategorized.2 comments
Thursday’s Question is back and (umm not really any) better than ever.
Yesterday I was told that I was old on Facebook for posting this joke (which really wasn’t even funny enough to qualify as a joke):
I’m going to get a haircut…and while they’re at it they’ll throw the rest in for free!
Then a little later I was told this “old man joke” by @trawker on Twitter:
What’d the ceiling say to the floor? I’ve gotcha covered!
So honestly, I’m sometimes amused by “old man jokes” so I need some for my collection.
Lay ‘em on me…and keep ‘em clean for goodness sakes; I’ve got a kid now, ya know.
Who Failed? January 28, 2009

I hate seeing this
Police said 20-year-old Brandon Watson shot his live-in girlfriend 19-year-old Audra McCullough after an argument. She later died.
I had a vested interest in this. He was a former client. A few years back I represented him in Juvenile Court on a much lesser charge.
Nonetheless, I had a long discussion with him. I had a serious talk about what he was doing with his life. I attempted to be a mentor…I told him he could call me anytime…I tried to talk to him on a level that was human rather than an authority figure browbeating him about “making bad choices.”
So….who failed? The system? Me? Did anyone “FAIL?”
Shutterfly Account January 19, 2009

I created a shutterfly account to share pics of Jonah.
Go check it out at:

I imagine it will be easier to share photos that way. PLUS, this should prevent me from turning into a mommy blog.
Enjoy.
I'm Jad. I'm married to a beautiful wife, live in the beautiful city of Nashville and have a beautiful life. First and foremost, I'm a Christian. Secondarily, I'm an attorney, a musician, and a big 'ol kid.
